Set up card payment
With the My Rental app, it is possible to offer card payment for bookings. Currently, the provider "SumUp" is supported. This page bundles everything related to the SumUp integration: the login, the verification of the merchant account, and the payment methods terminal and Tap to Pay.
The further instructions assume that a SumUp account already exists. The connection to SumUp can only be established or disconnected by users with the "Admin" role.
Log in to SumUp
The connection to SumUp is established as follows:
- Open the "Management" tab
- In the area "Finances" tap "SumUp"
- In the section "Merchant" tap "Login"
- The SumUp login page opens: log in there with your SumUp credentials and confirm access
After successful login, the section "Merchant" displays the merchant code and the currency of the linked SumUp account.
The login takes place directly with SumUp — the username and password are never entered or stored in My Rental. My Rental only receives access tokens from SumUp; these are stored encrypted in the My Rental backend.
The connection applies to the entire organization: other devices use it automatically; a separate setup per device is not necessary.
Access token
The access token is renewed automatically. The current status is displayed in the section "Merchant"; via "Renew token" the token can be renewed immediately if necessary.
Log out
Via "Logout" in the section "Merchant" the connection is disconnected. The saved access tokens are deleted in the process.
Verification by SumUp
Registering a SumUp account alone is not sufficient: SumUp must first verify the merchant account. As long as verification is pending, the SumUp page displays a status message with a link to the SumUp dashboard ("Complete verification").
Until verification is complete, all card actions are disabled — that is, connecting terminals, setting up Tap to Pay, test payments, as well as card payments and their refunds. In this case, the message "Card actions are disabled until SumUp has verified your merchant account." appears.
Connect terminal
In the section "Terminals", a SumUp card terminal is connected to the device via "Connect a terminal".
Alternatively, payments can also be accepted directly with a smartphone without a terminal — see Tap to Pay.
Tap to Pay
With "Tap to Pay" contactless payments can be accepted directly with a smartphone — completely without a terminal. The customer simply holds their card or device up to the smartphone.
To set it up, tap "Set up Tap to Pay" in the section "Payment Methods". Unlike the SumUp login, Tap to Pay is set up per device; the further setup differs depending on the platform.
Android
No further setup is necessary on Android — after tapping "Set up Tap to Pay", Tap to Pay is immediately ready for use.
iOS — Tap to Pay on iPhone
On the iPhone, the activation is provided by SumUp and must be performed once per device. In the process, the SumUp merchant account is linked to the Apple merchant account (the Apple ID of the device):
- Tap "Set up Tap to Pay"
- Follow the SumUp onboarding and accept Apple's terms of use
- Complete the setup on the device
- An iPhone XS or newer with iOS 16.4 or newer is required.
- If Tap to Pay has already been activated on the device (e.g., in the SumUp app), the onboarding may not start again — in this case, Tap to Pay is already ready for use.
Use as default payment method
With the option "Use Tap to Pay by default", Tap to Pay is set as the default payment method on the device and used automatically in the payment process. Other payment methods (e.g., terminal) remain available and can be selected during the payment process.
Accept a payment with Tap to Pay
- Start a payment process and enter the amount
- Select Tap to Pay as the payment method (if not set as default)
- Hold the smartphone close to the customer — the customer holds their card or device up to the smartphone
- Follow the instructions on the screen (e.g., enter PIN) and wait for confirmation
Testing
The connection can be checked under the section "Test" with a test payment.
